Why Online Therapy is Beneficial for College Students
College students may seek therapy and counseling services for a variety of reasons such as pre-existing mental health concerns, body image issues, life transitions, trauma, anxiety and depression, academic stress, and loneliness and isolation. Sometimes, for some students, managing therapy services with the many changes that come with college life can be overwhelming and difficult. While therapy is beneficial and accessible to everyone, this may not be the case for in-person therapy. This article explains why online therapy might be an option for you to consider, especially as a college student.
Accessibility
Not every college is in a big college town, so access to mental health care services sometimes can be difficult for students who are in these areas or that this inconvenience applies to. Online therapy also offers further accessibility for students to providers who fit their specific needs and preferences, such as those specializing in a certain type of therapy modality (CBT, ACT, EMDR, etc.) or those who specialize in treating certain disorders (substance use, life transitions, trauma, etc.). In addition, not every counseling center offered by universities takes insurance for mental health services or has immediate availability for students. Waitlists can sometimes pile up at on-campus service centers, discouraging a student from returning in the future.
Depending on the state’s requirements and a therapist’s credentials, students may also have the accessibility to still speak to their therapist even when on vacations or holiday breaks from campus by engaging in online therapy.
Flexibility and Convenience
College students have so many things to juggle within their week, including classes starting from early in the day and going until late in the evening, an after-school job, clubs, sports, or Greek life, and studying for exams. It can be hard sometimes to also include therapy into this already jam-packed schedule. Other students may not have access to easy transportation to in-person services/appointments. Online scheduling for therapy can help a college student easily fit an hour session into their busy schedule or even when they need the appointment but don’t have the means or access to go in person.
There are also so many different platforms for online therapy that might exist out there, including online therapists from surrounding private practices in your area or solely online-based websites where you can find a therapist that fits your needs.
Extra Privacy and Comfort
It can be hard during this time to admit to needing help and it can be hard when you’re already in a new environment and then have to think about going to another new environment for therapy. Online therapy offers the ability for therapy to be completely private for an individual as you don’t have to go into the college mental health services and potentially see others who you don’t necessarily want to know about your appointment there in the first place (just be sure to find a private, safe space to do your session such as in your room with headphones!). It can also be beneficial for you to feel comfortable during your appointment, and if this applies to you, you may benefit from online therapy services from the comfort of your room or dorm room.
